super easy to use
I'm glad to say that I've found another great free product!
It's a sound editor called Audacity.
It works great and is really super easy to use.
Just try it out and see for your self.
You can get 80 or so plug ins for it, they make the effects.
Every thing is free. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
It will also be listed on "the Geek Site".
Geek Site
I think this website is turning out good. I'm finally able to pay for a years hosting with the ad revenue. "thegate101.com" (my domain). That includes this Site here, the Geek Site, they are my favorite ones. My goal was to find good free software to out fit my computer with. I did.
I was so impressed with what was out there for free that I thought I would blog about it. I started to make a list, a list of really good Open Source software. So this is the good start to that ends. I hope you can find something useful or fun. If you have any suggestions leave a comment and I will look into it. (Thanks for stopping by the Geek Site) I always like to stop by the Geek Site.
Most editors do pretty much the same the same thing, they edit. But some are nicer to use than others.
Keep an eye out for my post on Notepad++, a really nice free text Editor.
I am putting a forum for Geeky stuff on my "thegate101.com" site, we already have a forum for Archery and General bull. Just a place to look for tips and tricks on things. The Geeky part will deal with easy code tips and tricks, things like that. Setting up a free web page, you get the picture. Stop on by and let me know what you think. You just mite find something interesting to use. I will be in and around looking for more information on free software.
the Geek Site
My goal here is to have a good time while trying to acomplish something productive. I have gathered together a bunch of Free Software and other services, like hosting and blogging. I have used every piece of software that I list and I have tried many of the services too. I list them on my Geek Site.
part web 2.0
The kids are for the most part web 2.0 savvy. That means most kids can use web based services on servers to store their pictures and E mails, along with videos and other chit chat. I see a problem on the parent end. They have no idea that that part of the Internet exists.
You gotta know! Make it priority one! Get a good fire wall, like (Zone Alarm or something similar). Set the kids browser to (trusted zones) only. Get anti spy ware programs for free. (Spybot and Lava Soft) make good ones. I use two. Anti spy-ware is important, but Anti Mal-ware and Anti-Virus are tops on your well protected list of things to do. You can find quality free ones on the Internet. (Links are on this site in the left navigation) With this software "properly employed" you shouldn't have any trouble.
I have good luck running the two anti spy scans on command. I use Avast anti Virus. Zone Alarm is my Fire wall. Every thing runs smooth. Try these out for free. If you use p2p stuff, peer to peer, be sure it is turned off when you are done. It probably already starts when you turn your computer on any way. This means that it is running in the back ground serving up all those files you keep in the Lime Wire folder. Even when it's shut down it wants to try and share your files. The only way to stay safe is to allow it with a fire wall when you want it, then deny it when you don't and it wants to start sharing again.
You can get a lot of drive by traffic, including the GI man. A lot of people get letters about the content in their p2p folders. Kids spend a lot of time on line, looking for music in places like this. Just keep an eye on the hard drive, using special soft ware and techniques. It's not that hard to stay one step a-head of the bad guy.
"Donate my what"
Thank Jacknife for this one! The title I used for this post is the name of one of Jacknife's BLOG posts.
Here is a link to a free radio station site. From what I have seen, I think its pretty cool, it looks like they have it all. http://radiotime.com/
(This could be one of them trials, I don't know yet) (It's fun while it lasts though.)
I like to see new stuff once in a while.
Do you have something to big for E mail?
Files to big to E mail are a pane in the keester, thats why I found this free service.I use it my self, You can find mine in the left side bar of the Geek Site under File up load. Powered by: SendThisFile.
What you do is up load your big file to their server. Once it's there an E-mail is sent with a link in it.
Click on the link to down load the big file. Pretty cool! I thought it was worth writing about.

Swimming with the Fox

I think the number one reason that I started using Firefox, was for a feeling of independence. I felt like a rebel not using Microsoft stuff. It felt good exploring new territory.
I had tried out several other browsers before finding Firefox. They were kind of fun and sorta fancy, but not as effective as Firefox. I started getting into web development about the same time that I started using Firefox. They go hand in hand in this category.
Getting “plug-ins” and “extending Firefox” is probably the easiest thing to do. Remember that the more extensions you install, will possibly have an effect on your browsers characteristics and performance. Don’t worry though, they are easy to un-install.
I joined this community rite off the bat (Spread Firefox).
When you think about it; we are a large community (the Internet). But when you look at it closer; we are all just small fish in a big river. Internet Explorer taught most of us how to swim; hey, it’s a long swim but were feeling no pain. It’s interesting to watch how it grows.
